About me:

Denise
Now that I have completed my 365 Photo project, I am embarking on a challenge that I am pretty hesitant about.
My motivation in taking this on is the desire to improve my drawing ability, even if it is only by a small amount. I was never much of a doodler or sketcher but have admired the eye and abilities of those who seem to effortlessly make a sketch and have it look good. I am trying to keep my expectations sort of low but don't want to set myself for failure by keeping the bar too low but I want it low enough that I don't get too discouraged. I am planning on adding pictures of my images daily thus continuing my 365 project :). My supplies are purchased and I am ready to start today. Hold on tight, this might be a bumpy ride....

Skyler - Day 10 - Doodle

Well its been a while for sure. Oops. But here was my doodle for the day. I call it, little power mage or LPM for short. Let's get this started again.

Denise - Day 10 - Super Doodle

Super Doodle
Now if I haven't mentioned that I don't really doodle then this will help to illustrate my lack of experience (pun intended).  I really had no idea where it was going. I started with the heart and then tried to come up with a "theme" that would go with my heart.  So maybe I didn't pull off the full page but I tried.  :)

Denise - Day 8 and 9

Okay,  I broke through my mental block and decided to sit down and draw tonight. It could be because I was sick and sitting finally seemed permissible or because I had plenty of sleep and could focus without getting frustrated. Whatever it was I am feeling pretty good about what came out and made it to the paper. AJ Thanks for your hints with the shading and Skyler thanks for your patience.

Day 8 & 9 - Skyler - Drawing a light source / Man made drawing

Haven't posted for a long while. Sorry. New job and apartment hunting have made me a bit busy. Drawing a light source a bit harder than I expected it but not too bad. We had to draw 2 man made things from a list of four. I chose the headphones and airplane. I spent more time on the airplane and rather like it.

Denise - Day 7 - draw what you like

I took some time drawing this in bed tonight but had a chatty and fidgety girl who wanted to talk about everything I was drawing. It's true that I didn't draw much,  it's mostly words.

Day 7 - Skyler - Draw what you like

I like the Legend of Zelda games a lot so I drew Link. Just don't look at his sword...or right foot and he looks pretty dang good in my opinion. At least, you can tell who he is anyways. Yeah for video games. Also, this should actually be day 7 but for some strange reason I did day 5. Day 6 was cubism day though, so it makes sense that it is labeled the wrong day, right...

Skyler - Day 5 - Cubism

I actually think one of my hand drawings was a better cubism representation, but this one didn't turn out too bad. I sort of like it anyways.

Denise - Day #6 - Cubism

Here is my take on a vase of flowers in the style of Pablo Picasso.  I would have liked to have added color but the instructor didn't mention this until the solution portion of the video so we will just stick with my black and white.

Skyler - Day 5 - Refinement Drawing - Space Villian

So here are my refinement drawings. They are space villains, more specifically Daleks from Doctor Who.  I didn't do too many...Oops.  But I definitely feel like I did do a better job on the second one, though there are parts of the first one I like better. It was fun anyways and I feel like I'm getting better and better at drawing!

Denise - Day 5 - Refinement Drawing - skulls

So...  The assignment was to choose from a list of subjects an image to draw several times throughout the day and hopefully get better at drawing it.  I chose skulls.  Since it is Halloween, I have a few decorations that I referenced for a couple of the sketches and then I also reviewed an image of skull online to reference for shape, etc.

Still not feeling great about my skills but I know I won't ever get better without trying, sure wish it came easier but nothing worthwhile comes easy (if you believe in clichés).  The images were taken with my cell phone so sorry about the quality.

Denise - Day 4 - Give yourself a high 5

I apologize for the delay in drawing and posting my hands.  Life got really busy and I do sort of avoid drawing I guess because of the stress.  I took a picture of my hand today for Macro Monday and followed my own advice when I was drawing.  I didn't do any sketches beforehand which is probably obvious but I also wasn't as frustrated today.  This is a big step for me because I guess I am a little hard on myself.  I want this challenge to be fun and not oppressive so today was much better.

Skyler - Day 4 - Give yourself a high five!

Wow, I spent a lot of time on these today. The challenge was to draw 5 hands, all in a different style. I'm really rather proud of all of them (except one, can you guess which  one). It was fun, but i probably wont spend quite this much time on them again.

Skyler - Day 3 - Draw what you see

This one took a long time. There are a couple of shapes in here that are black holes (I just filled them in because i couldn't think of anything for them. Oops). The challenge was just to fill in each shape with a picture you imagine. I did my best and here it is. If you have any questions on what the pictures are please ask. Time for ice cream!

Denise - Day 3 - Draw what you see

Well, after viewing the solution sheet that the instructor came up with apparently I did not quite grasp the concept.  I looked at the shapes and tried to discern larger shapes from the smaller.  My teetering Joe Cool and misshapen lamb were what I came up with.  I wasn't as frustrated with this exercise but I didn't really do it correctly, sort of like #2.  Good thing this isn't getting graded for credit or I would not be passing right now.

Denise - Day 2- Line artwork drawing

Now I knew that I would be intimidated by this but I really am so VERY stressed out that I cannot create what I see in front of me.  I am only trying to copy, not trace, but just recreate the sketches that the instructor created and I am struggling...  I walked away from it this morning feeling deflated and I've come back to it this afternoon.  After working for 40 minutes, I have one of the 4 drawings completed.  I need to take a breath and try to get it done while Aliya is asleep so she doesn't hear all of my negative self talk that is happening right now.

Vent, vent, vent... breathe, breathe, breathe.  Pick up the pencil and start again.

This exercise took me about 2 hours today.  Eek!  Glad that I had some time to work on it.

For the last 1/2 hour of the work, I have been listening to the broadcast of Rosh Hashanah services where my cousin Larry  is one of the Cantors conducting the service.

I realize that I was supposed to come up with my own version of this assignment but I wanted to finish it so I have close variations of the samples. I may have to revisit this and come up with my own versions.

Skyler - Day 2 One Line

Well here is day two of the drawing challenge. I am not quite as happy with these but they were much harder to accomplish. They needed to be drawn with a single line, so it made it quite a bit more difficult. I do really like my hand and coke bottle though. I sort of gave up on the unicycle though ;)

Skyler - Day 1

Day 1. Cat Pic.

Well here goes nothing. I am rather proud of my cat and it was fun to do. Though his back leg is a bit crazy, I will hopefully get better at feline anatomy as time progresses. Cheers everybody.

Denise & Aliya - Day 1 - Draw a cat

I am questioning whether or not I should receive some sort of drawing instruction before I just jump in and start drawing because I don't really know how to approach drawing in general.  This is very intimidating but I am going to jump in and review other websites/books for tips along the way.  I may have to end up repeating or continuing the challenger to really improve or maybe it will be time to take a class or just say goodbye to drawing.  Time will tell...

Aliya is going to participate in the challenge too but I am just posting her images with mine.
